The Belagavi district administration is reportedly evacuating people and livestock from the banks of the Krishna River to safer places due to the overflowing of the river and its tributaries. Dozens of families in the Chikkodi and Nippani taluks have been shifted to safer places, Kannada media reports said on Thursday morning.
Several religious institutions, such as temples and dargahs, on the banks of the Krishna River have been flooded, while farmlands with sugarcane, groundnut, and soybean, among other crops, have been submerged. The Datta Mandir near the Kallola-Yadoor bridge in Chikkodi taluk reportedly remains submerged.
According to reports, the Manga residential area of Hulagabala village in Athani taluk has been completely flooded. More than a hundred villagers and livestock remain stranded due to the rains.
Belagavi District Collector Mohammad Roshan, Zilla Panchayat CEO Rahul Shinde, Chikkodi Deputy Divisional Officer Subhash Sampagaonvi, and others are tracking developments, Prajavani said in a report.
More than ten bridges on the Krishna, Dudhganga, and Vedganga rivers in the Chikkodi subdivision remain inaccessible due to flooding. The submerged bridges have caused traffic issues in many places.
When the monsoon season begins and the rains start in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra, lakhs of cusecs of water flow into the Krishna River. Along with the heavy rains, water bodies like the Ghataprabha, Malaprabha, Doni River, and Hirehalla join the Krishna River, causing heavy flooding.
