Four new locations in Sirmaur dist now under surveillance for traffic violations

In a bid to enhance road safety and reduce accidents, the Sirmaur district police have taken another decisive step by installing online challan cameras at four new locations across three national highways. The initiative, launched under the Integrated Traffic Management System, aims to check traffic violations such as overspeeding, not wearing helmets or seat belts and reckless driving.

The newly installed cameras have been placed at Shambhu Wala, Rajban, near Degree College Nahan and Sarahan Bus Stand, following a careful study of accident-prone spots. According to officials, challans for traffic violations will begin from the first week of September.

Earlier, such automated monitoring was limited only to Majra and Bhupur along the Kala Amb-Paonta Sahib National Highway. With this latest expansion, online challan facilities are now in operation at six strategic locations in the district.

District authorities have highlighted that Sirmaur already has over 80 CCTV cameras spread across 11 police station jurisdictions for monitoring vehicular movement. However, the use of specialised online challan cameras at accident-prone areas marks an important step towards curbing rash driving and preventing loss of lives.

Speaking on the development, DSP Headquarters Ramakant Thakur said, “The new online challan cameras will help ensure that traffic rules are followed strictly. These locations were chosen as they witnessed multiple accidents in the past. Our goal is not just enforcement but also to make roads safer for everyone.”

Local residents and commuters have reacted positively to the move, noting that stricter enforcement can help reduce road accidents, though some also stressed the need for awareness campaigns and improved infrastructure alongside surveillance.

With this initiative, Sirmaur joins the growing list of districts adopting technology-driven traffic enforcement, striking a balance between strict monitoring and public safety. Authorities expect that consistent implementation will encourage safer driving habits, ultimately leading to fewer accidents and a smoother travel experience across the district’s highways.
