One woman becomes bride of five sons, even her father-in-law takes advantage, left viewers shocked and unsettled, film is…

In the ever-evolving world of cinema, many films come and go. While some films entertain us or show us larger-than-life action sequences, other films are a mirror to society, and they deliver a strong message, reflecting uncomfortable truths that people hesitate to confront. While most films entertain, some films leave an impact so deep that the audience is compelled to question certain things. One such similar story is of a film that was released in the year 2003. The message of this film left the audience disturbed and provoked them to think.

The film that we are talking about is none other than Matrubhoomi: A Nation Without Women.

Directed by Manish Jha, this film was considered one of the most thought-provoking Indian films ever made. The film showcased a dystopian future where the absence of women leads to chaos, violence, and moral collapse. Even today, the plot questions society and stays relevant.

The Storyline

The plot of the film is centered around a newborn baby girl who is being killed by her family, reflecting the brutal practice of female infanticide. Over time, such killings of female children become routine, and eventually, a time comes when there are no women left in the village. Only men are left, with only a few elderly women. Now, villagers get concerned about their married life and sexual needs. After some time, the village head brings home a woman named Kalki, bought from another village, to marry one of his sons. But instead of being married to one man, Kalki is forced into a horrifying situation where she is married to five brothers, and even the father exploits her vulnerability.

Week after week, Kalki is subjected to abuse, treated as an object rather than a human being. She had to sleep with each of the brothers every week, and her father-in-law also took advantage of her helplessness. However, the youngest brother understands Kalki’s pain and shows genuine affection. The two become close, and looking at this, they kill the youngest brother. Later, Kalki announces that she is pregnant, and the entire family begins to fight over the unborn child, leading to further conflict and bloodshed.

A strong message that’s a reflection of our society

This film was a reflection on the ugly face of patriarchy. It also showcased how men frustrated by the lack of women turn to pornography, cross-dressing performances, and even abuse animals. This film touches on the topic of the extreme consequences of gender imbalance. The audience is compelled to question women’s treatment in our society.

Matrubhoomi shocked audiences worldwide. While a lot of people praise this masterpiece for such a strong message, others found it deeply unsettling. The film was rated 7.7 on IMDb, Time magazine listed it among the “Top Ten Films in the World,” and it won multiple awards at international festivals, including Venice and Florence. Manish Jha’s Matrubhoomi is not just a film but a warning. Showing the consequence of gender discrimination, this thought-provoking film was nothing short of remarkable. Set against the backdrop of Bihar, the film featured a powerful star cast including Tulip Joshi, Sudhir Pandey, Sushant Singh, Piyush Mishra, and others.

Even after two decades, Matrubhoomi continues to remind us that the fight against gender inequality is not yet over.
