Daniel Day-Lewis returns from retirement with 'family reunion' film 'Anemone', trailer OUT

Three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis is finally back from retirement with a bang in 'Anemone', a new drama directed by his son, Ronan Day-Lewis.

The first trailer for the tense thriller dropped on Thursday night, offering a glimpse of a bleak and atmospheric film, which explores strained family ties.

Stormy coastlines, shadowy rooms, and terse conversations between Day-Lewis' character Ray and his estranged brother can also be seen in the trailer, along with glimpses of drawings with what looks like people holding Irish flags. 

'Anemone' was co-written by father and son, at once adding to its sense of intimacy and unease.

Produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B and distributed by Focus Features, the film also sees Sean Bean, Samantha Morton, and Samuel Bottomley in important roles.

It is set to premiere at the New York Film Festival later this year, before opening in the US on October 3, followed by a wider release on October 10. 

Though some critics have jokingly labelled Anemone the “ultimate nepo baby film", Ronan seems to make a case for himself in this trailer that prioritises mood over plot, hinting at a story steeped in grief, reconciliation, and undercurrents of violence.

Daniel Day-Lewis has a history of walking away at his peak—retiring after 'The Boxer' in the 1990s before returning for 'Gangs of New York' (2002), then again returning after his retirement following 'Phantom Thread' (2017).

 

Whether 'Anemone' marks the legendary actor's permanent comeback or not, the trailer's stark imagery and Day-Lewis' unsettling presence suggest that at 68, he has lost none of his intensity.
