Chandigarh MC likely to introduce single parking passes for vehicles

In a bid to give relief to city residents, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is considering introducing single pass of Rs 500 for all parking lots in Chandigarh for four-wheelers and Rs 250 pass for two-wheelers.

This single pass will be valid across all 89 paid parking lots in the city for unlimited times per month. In July, the MC had sought the feedback and suggestions from the public exploring the possibility of introducing a city-wide monthly car parking passes for vehicles. The corporation has been running the parking lots after the last company left the management of these in 2024.

Sources said that proposal had received huge response as many persons supported the move and even sent suggestions. The proposed pass will be valid for use in all paid parking areas under MC jurisdiction and allow unlimited entries and exits, offering a more convenient and cost-effective option for regular car users.

An officer of the MC said that they were considering all suggestions and would prepare the final proposal. The officer further said that the civic body was going to get regular income from these passes. The new system promises not just convenience for commuters, but a major revenue boost for the corporation, all without additional expenditure. He said that with the introduction of these passes, the chances of pilferage of parking fee will be checked.

The corporation is yet to finalise the request for proposal for smart parking. Presently, the MC does not have sufficient staff to manage the parking lots. Due to this, the corporation is suffering huge losses by running the parking lots itself.

Sources said that the passes would be valid even after the implementation of smart AI-based parking project across 89 locations. The MC has also approved a proposal to increase the parking rates from 30 per cent to 40 per cent over the existing prices under smart parking.

The new rates will be implemented once the new company takes over the smart parking. The rates of parking for two wheelers have been approved from Rs 7 to Rs 10 for 15 minutes to 4 hours, from Rs 10 to Rs 16 for 4 to 8 hours and additional Rs 5 per hour after 8 hours. Similarly, the parking rates for four-wheelers will be enhanced from Rs 14 to 20 for 15 minutes to 4 hours, Rs 25 for 4 hours to 8 hours and Rs 10 for every additional hour.
