2 dead, 23 injured in fire at LPG plant in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur

Two people have died and 23 others sustained serious burn injuries following a fire at the Hindustan Petroleum LPG plant in Mandiyala village on the Hoshiarpur-Jalandhar road in Hoshiarpur on Friday night, officials said Saturday.

Hoshiarpur Civil Hospital Senior Medical Officer Dr Kuldeep Singh said that 23 burn victims were admitted on Friday night following the incident. Out of them, 15 have been referred to specialty hospitals, including two transferred to a private hospital in Adampur.

He said seven patients remain under treatment at Civil Hospital Hoshiarpur. One victim was brought in dead, while another died later at the private hospital.

The fire broke out on Friday night, with residents of nearby villages reporting several blasts. Plant officials notified the Hoshiarpur fire brigade at 10:05 pm, and fire tenders were dispatched immediately.

Following the blast, outraged residents staged a sit-in near the site on Saturday morning. The protesters claimed they have long demanded that the LPG bottling plant be relocated away from the area, but their concerns have gone unaddressed, leaving the community vulnerable to such accidents at all times.

They alleged that tanker drivers often park vehicles on both sides of the highway instead of within the plant premises, increasing the chances of a major accident.
