Maharashtra EV Policy 2025: The Maharashtra government has taken a big step to promote eco-friendly transportation. The government has made electric vehicles (EVs) completely toll free on some major roads in the state. This decision includes Atal Setu, Mumbai-Pune Expressway and Samruddhi Mahamarg (Mumbai-Nagpur). This exemption has come into effect from 22 August 2025.
This policy has been made by the state government under the Motor Vehicles Tax Act of 1958 and the decision has been approved by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar. At the same time, Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik confirmed this in a press conference.
What did the Transport Minister of Maharashtra Government say?
In the press conference, Minister Sarnaik said, by waiving the toll for electric vehicles, we are not only supporting EV owners, but also taking steps towards reducing carbon emissions and a clean environment. He said that this step is in line with the state’s commitment to green mobility and sustainable development.
Sarnaik further said that this exemption will be applicable on some major routes like Atal Setu (Mumbai-Navi Mumbai), Mumbai-Pune Expressway, and Samriddhi Mahamarg (Mumbai-Nagpur).
What did the experts say?
At the same time, experts believe that this decision will increase the number of electric vehicles, reducing expenses for both private owners and commercial vehicle operators. This policy will prove to be a big support for the EV ecosystem of Maharashtra and can also become an inspiration for other states.
All electric vehicles will get benefit
Let us tell you that all types of electric vehicles, including private cars and buses, will get the benefit of this toll exemption. Specifically, M2, M3 and M6 category EVs, that is, private four-wheelers and state or private buses, are eligible for the exemption.
What is the benefit of the new EV toll policy?
This EV toll exemption policy of the Maharashtra government is part of the state’s broader mission to reduce carbon emissions, curb harmful pollutants and promote clean transportation. The Maharashtra EV policy released in April discussed several benefits of electric mobility, including toll exemption on major highways.
It is worth noting that this initiative of the government clearly shows that Maharashtra is moving towards becoming a leader in sustainable development and clean transportation and in the long run it will have a positive impact on the environment and clean energy goals.
