The Kaithal police have arrested Gurjant Singh of Bullapur village in Malerkotla, Punjab, for allegedly duping a person of Rs 22 lakh on the pretext of arranging a Canadian work permit for him.

Kuldeep Singh of Ramthali village alleged that in July 2022, Gurjant and his wife Gurmeet Kaur visited his home, claiming that they could secure a two-year Canadian work permit for Rs 45 lakh.

Kuldeep and his wife Sarvjit Kaur handed over their passports, documents and photographs. Subsequently, the accused collected Rs 21.99 lakh through bank transfers and cash, assuring that the work permit would arrive within six months, said the police spokesperson.

The victim said whenever he asked for updates, the accused kept stating that the process was underway. Later, he falsely claimed to have arranged visas for New Zealand and even shared forged visa copies.

In December 2024, the accused claimed that he had arranged a visa for Canada and sent a copy on WhatsApp in January, which was also fake. When the victim demanded a refund, the accused allegedly threatened him with dire consequences, the spokesperson said.

The accused were produced in the court on Saturday, which remanded them in three-day police custody.
