Consumers urged to avail free rooftop solar scheme for free power, income
The Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited (HPSEBL) has urged residents of Kullu district to fully embrace the Pradhan Mantri Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a flagship government programme promoting rooftop solar power. The scheme offers households not only free electricity but also a chance to earn income by supplying surplus energy back to the grid.
HPSEBL consultant Anurag Prashar revealed that the scheme is steadily gaining popularity in Kullu. So far, 257 households have applied, of which 60 rooftop solar plants are already operational. Around 51 consumers have received subsidies worth Rs 44 lakh, underlining the financial benefits of early adoption. Prashar described the initiative as a “boon for families,” ensuring savings on power bills while contributing to clean energy generation.
To apply, consumers can visit the official website pmsuryaghar.gov.in or approach their nearest HPSEBL subdivision office. Assistance is also available through toll-free numbers 1800-180-8060 and 1912.
Statewide, the scheme has strong institutional backing, with 187 registered vendors supporting rooftop solar projects. Among districts, Kangra has emerged as the frontrunner, installing 955 rooftop plants—a model that other regions, including Kullu, are encouraged to follow.
The financial incentives make the scheme particularly attractive. Households can avail subsidies of Rs 33,000 for 1 kilowatt (kW) systems, Rs 66,000 for 2 kW and Rs 85,800 for 3 kW or above. Additionally, bank loans at low interest rates are available, easing the transition to solar power for middle-income families.
