Educational institutions to remain closed till Sept 7
Chandigarh: Keeping in view prevailing flood situation in the state, the government has decided to keep all educational institutions, including colleges, universities, closed till September 7. This was said by Minister of Education Harjot Singh Bains on Wednesday. The decision was taken following directions from CM Bhagwant Mann to ensure safety and well-being of students and staff, he said.
Boy swept away in Ghaggar
Abohar: A 12-year-old boy, identified as Ravi of Chak 47 GB village in Sriganganagar, is feared drowned in the swollen Ghaggar. A state disaster management team is searching for the boy in a motorboat. Four children from the village had gone to take bath in the river on Tuesday evening. The kids did not realise the water level rising gradually.
Couple dies in roof collapse
Sangrur: An elderly couple from a family of labourers was killed when the roof of a room of their house at Maur Nabha village in Barnala collapsed following incessant rain on Tuesday. Karnail Singh (62) and his wife Ninder Kaur (60) died on the spot while their 12-year-old grandson Mehakdeep Singh sustained serious injuries. The boy was admitted to the government hospital at Tapa. Villagers sought relief for the family from the government.
One-day salary for flood-hit
Chandigarh: The Punjab Police Housing Corporation has extended support to flood-affected families across the state. In all, 146 staff members, including engineering and clerical personnel, have contributed one-day salary (around Rs 2,27,107) to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
Rs 71 cr for disaster-hit dists
Chandigarh: Punjab Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian on Wednesday said the state government has released Rs 71 crore to deal with the flood situation. While Rs 35.50 crore has already been released to all districts in the first phase, an additional Rs 35.50 crore has now been sanctioned for the 12 flood-affected districts that have borne the maximum brunt of devastation. Mundian reiterated that every possible step is being taken to save lives and property.
