GST 2.0 What Costlier: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has made a big change in the GST system. It has been named GST 2.0. In the new GST system, only two slabs have been kept to make the tax structure easier. On the one hand, now the tax on everyday essentials will be reduced. On the other hand, now the tax on harmful and luxury items has been increased. From now on, the GST on soft drinks, sugar and flavored drinks has been increased from 28% to 40%. Apart from this, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that petrol cars larger than 1,200 cc and diesel cars larger than 1,500 cc will be taxed at 40 percent. Let us tell you that this new system will come into effect from 22 September 2025.
40% GST will be levied on these items
Let us tell you that a higher tax slab (40%) has been created, which will be applied on Luxury and Sin Goods. The items on which 40% GST will be levied are-
– All types of aerated water
– Carbonated beverages
– Caffeinated drinks
– Non-alcoholic beverages
– Motorcycles with engine capacity above 350cc
– Helicopters
What is the objective of the government
In simple words, soft drinks, sugary and flavored beverages, and luxury items will become expensive because now 40% tax has been imposed on them. Let us tell you that the purpose of this change is to reduce the tax burden on things of common need and impose more tax on luxury or harmful (sin) items, so that revenue also increases and consumption also remains balanced. However, tobacco products will remain at 28% for now, but in future they can also be put in the 40% slab. According to the recommendations made in the GST Council meeting, changes in GST rates on other services and goods except cigarettes, chewing tobacco products like zarda, unmanufactured tobacco and bidi will be effective from September 22, while the new rates for these items will be applicable from a date to be notified later.
