Marginal farmer donates entire wheat straw stock to save livestock in flood-hit districts

In a heartwarming gesture, a marginal farmer from Badian village in the Gidderbaha Assembly segment here has set an example of compassion during the ongoing flood crisis. Ravinder Singh, aka Shinda, who owns just one acre of land and cultivates about 20 acres on lease along with his brother, has donated over 200-quintal of wheat straw to feed the cattle of flood-affected families.

A village resident, Raja Singh, said that when the villagers decided to pool fodder for animals, Ravinder readily offered his entire stock. “Elated over his generosity, the villagers immediately honoured him with a ‘siropa’ (robe of honour),” he added.

“Farmers know the importance of fodder for animals. For many families, cattle are their only source of livelihood. If the animals survive, families will survive too,” said another villager Gurmeet Singh, adding that Ravinder’s decision had motivated others to contribute whatever they can.

The village residents said that the entire stock of wheat straw collected was being loaded onto the trailers to send to the flood-affected Fazilka and Ferozepur districts.
