US Population Decline: The United States is staring at a major crisis as the country is likely to face a significant population decline by the end of this year, primarily due to a sharp decline in birth rates and a rapid decrease in the the number of immigrants. What is driving the US population decline?
As per the report, the US population could plummet by about 6,000, with US census reporting a total of 519,000 births in 2024, making the first country’s population decline in its 250-year history. Data reveals that net immigration to the US in 2025 could plummet from 2.8 million to between between 115,000 and negative-525,000, which is still a 96 percent dip in international immigration, even at the lower end.
Notably, the US was never witnessed a population decline since its founding in 1776, and the country’s thrived even during the Civil War, that killed over 700,000 Americans. The US population also witnessed an increase during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to a report by the New York Post.
Is Trump’s immigration policy to blame?
Several experts have claimed that US President Donald Trump’s tough stance on immigration is one of the forces driving the US population decline.
As per a Pew Research Center report, the number of immigrants in the US has dropped for the first the time in nearly 50 years, witnessing a decline of over 1.4 million people in the first six months of 2025 after Trump launched a major crackdown on illegal border crossings and initiated mass deportations.
About 1.6 million illegal immigrants have left the US voluntarily since Trump assumed office for his second presidential term in January, as per the US Department of Homeland Security.
