'She was troubling me': Man hides pistol in helmet, guns down estranged wife in busy Gorakhpur market

A man gunned down his estranged wife in public view at a busy market in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, around 8 pm  on Wednesday after they duo was involved in an argument.

Mamata Chauhan came to the market to get her photograph taken at a studio on Jail Road in Shahpur. Once she came out, her husband, Vishwakarma Chauhan, was waiting on her, according to The Times of India.

Vishwakarma had a tiff with Mamata, following which he shot her with a country-made pistol that he hid in his helmet. After firing two shots, the accused did not flee and stood at the spot for around 25 minutes until police arrived. He reportedly kept repeating that his wife was "troubling" him as police detained him.

The woman was shot in her chest and hand. Onlookers rushed the woman to Shri Vinayak Hospital on Jail Road in Shahpur, but she was pronounced dead on arrival.

The couple, who had been married for 15 years, were not in good terms for more than a year and they eventually got separated. They had a daughter, 13, who was staying with the mother at a rented home in Shahpur.

The duo have been fighting over property disputes and police are looking at this angle as one of the likely motives.
