Doraha residents demand boats be relocated to flood-hit areas
Residents of Doraha are urging authorities to relocate boats recently introduced for recreational purposes in Kingdom Park to flood-hit areas to aid in rescue operations.
The residents, led by Jandeep Kaushal, argue that these boats can provide crucial support to those stranded in floodwaters.
Kaushal emphasized the need for swift action, stating that every minute counts in this situation. “Not only from Doraha, utilising boats of amusement parks from all over Punjab could significantly enhance the rescue operations and provide essential support to those stranded in flood-affected areas," he added.
Barjinder Jandu, a social worker, questioned the purpose of infrastructure that remains unused when it could potentially save lives.
“On the one hand it is a do or die situation for the flood victims while on the other hand such potentially life-saving infrastructure is standing unused at such a critical time. The authorities should rather promptly assess and utilise all such infrastructure which can be of use at this decisive juncture,” expressed Shalu Baba of Doraha.
SDM Payal Pardeep Bains has assured that the availability of the two boats has been communicated to SDM Jagraon, who is managing the affected area. “If any such emergent situation arises in the district, the boats shall immediately be provided on priority basis since nothing is more important than saving lives at this juncture," Bains added.
The demand for boats in flood relief operations highlights the challenges faced by authorities in ensuring adequate resources for rescue efforts. With Punjab facing severe flooding, boats have become a crucial lifeline for rescuing people and delivering basic aid in submerged villages.
The residents’ demand for boat relocation is part of a broader effort to support flood relief operations in Punjab.
