Ban Social Media: Facebook, X, YouTube… Nepal banned 26 social media platforms
Nepal Ban Social Media: Nepal government has banned 26 social media platforms including Facebook, X, YouTube and Instagram. Know what is the reason behind the decision of Nepal government
Nepal Ban Social Media: Nepal’s KP Sharma Oli government took a big step and decided to ban 26 social media platforms including Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram and YouTube. The government says that these companies did not meet the registration deadline, due to which this action was taken.
The Ministry of Information and Technology issued a public notice and ordered the Nepal Telecom Authority to ‘deactivate all unregistered social media sites until they are registered.’
The registration deadline has expired
The government had earlier appealed to social media companies several times for registration. On August 28, a seven-day deadline was again given, which expired on Wednesday night. Ministry spokesperson Gajendra Thakur had hoped on Wednesday afternoon that the companies would come forward before midnight. But when no one contacted, it was decided to implement the ban in a ministry meeting on Thursday.
The ban decision is being opposed
Free speech supporters say that this decision is just an excuse and the real purpose is to suppress criticism. They argue that the government’s registration conditions are very strict and intrusive, which the companies found it better to reject. According to free speech supporters, this will cause long-term damage to Nepal’s democratic credentials and create a negative image globally.
Ban has been imposed before as well
This is not the first time Nepal has banned a platform. In November 2023, the Pushpa Kamal Dahal government blocked TikTok, but the ban was lifted in August 2024 when the company agreed to register.
Social media users also called the ban decision unfair and suicidal. Many people posted saying that perhaps this would be their last message, as platforms could be shut down at any time.
