PAU ranks third among agri varsities in India, first in Punjab
The Ministry of Education released the National Institutional Ranking Framework Rankings for the year 2025 today, marking the 10th edition of India’s most comprehensive evaluation of higher education institutions. Several universities and colleges from Punjab have made significant progress across various categories, reflecting the state’s growing academic strength and commitment to excellence.
In the category of Agriculture and Allied Sectors, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, has secured the third rank in the country for the third consecutive year. Lovely Professional University, Phagwara, ranked 17th, while Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, secured the 30th position in this category.
“The only two institutions ranking above PAU are the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, and the National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, both of which are centrally funded. This places Punjab Agricultural University at the top among all state agricultural universities in the country,” claimed PAU spokesperson.
Christian Dental College, Ludhiana, ranked 24th among 223 dental institutions across India, improving from its 30th position last year. “This milestone reflects the dedication of our faculty, students and alumni, besides inspiring us to further our mission of excellence in education, patient care, and research,” said Doctor Abi M Thomas, Principal of Christian Dental College.
In the medical category, the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, secured the second rank nationally. Dayanand Medical College, Ludhiana, improved its position to 36th from 40th last year, while Christian Medical College, Ludhiana, ranked 47th, up from 49th rank last year.
In the overall category, Chandigarh University, Mohali, ranked 32nd; followed by the Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala, 44th; Lovely Professional University, Phagwara, 49th; Indian Institute of Technology, Rupnagar, 56th; Panjab University, Chandigarh, 57th; Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Mohali, 70th; and Punjab Agricultural University, 81st.
In the university category, Chandigarh University ranked 19th, followed by Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (26th), Lovely Professional University (31st), Punjab Agricultural University (64th), Central University of Punjab, Bathinda, (77th), Chitkara University, Rajpura, (78th), and Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology at Sangrur (90th).
Among colleges, only two institutions from Chandigarh made it to the list—Government Home Science College (35th) and Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma College (70th). No college from Punjab featured in this category.
In the research institutions category, Chandigarh University ranked 34th, Panjab University (37th) and Lovely Professional University (40th).
In the engineering category, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology ranked 29th; followed by Chandigarh University (31st); Indian Institute of Technology at Rupnagar (32nd); Lovely Professional University (48th); Doctor Bhim Rao Ambedkar National Institute of Technology at Jalandhar (55th); Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology (79th); and Chitkara University (89th).
In the management category, Chandigarh University ranked 32nd, Lovely Professional University 44th, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology 46th, Indian Institute of Management, Amritsar, 64th, and Chitkara University 78th.
In the law category, Lovely Professional University ranked 26th, followed by Army Institute of Law-Mohali (37th), and Central University of Punjab-Bathinda (40th).
In the architecture and planning category, Chandigarh University ranked 14th, Lovely Professional University 24th and Chitkara University 38th.
