US-India strained relations to end soon? PM Modi makes BIG statement after Trump’s ‘special relationship’ remark, says ‘Fully reciprocate…’

In what could be a major step in ending the strained India-US tensed relations over tariffs and purchases of Russian oil, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday acknowledged US President Donald Trump’s softening stance. Trump earlier today said India and the United States have a “special relationship” and there’s nothing to worry about as the two countries “just have moments on occasion”.

Reciprocating President Trump’s sentiments, PM Modi said, “India, US have very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership. Deeply appreciate and fully reciprocate President Trump’s sentiments, positive assessment of ties.”

Notably, India announced that PM Modi will not be speaking at the high-level 80th session of the UN General Assembly later this month. Instead, India’s statement will be delivered by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on September 27, as per a revised speakers’ list released.

What Trump said?

In Washington, Trump said, “I’ll always be friends with (Narendra) Modi, he’s a great prime minister. He’s great. I’ll always be friends, but I just don’t like what he’s doing at this particular moment. But India and the United States have a special relationship. There’s nothing to worry about. We just have moments on occasion,” he said in the Oval Office.

“I don’t think we have” (lost India)… I get along very well with (Indian PM) Modi as you know, he was here a couple of months ago, we went to the Rose Garden.”

Things looked going down the hill after Trump’s recent remark. The US president had said “Looks like we’ve lost India and Russia to deepest, darkest, China. May they have a long and prosperous future together! President Donald J. Trump”. Trump had also posted an old photo of Modi with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Trump’s post on social media came days after the bonhomie among Modi, Xi and Putin at a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in the Chinese city of Tianjin drew global attention.

India and US are currently witnessing a strained ties after Washington imposed 50% tariff.
