‘But that is why I think…’: Former India great advocates new batting position for Sanju Samson and its not opening, his name is…
New Delhi: The Indian team is set to make its return to the T20 format after more than seven months. India will play their first match in the Asia Cup 2025 against the UAE on September 10 (Wednesday). This tournament is also part of the preparations for the 2026 T20 World Cup. The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, has made minimal changes to the team, trusting the core group from the England series.
Sanju Samson’s Place in Question
Despite a poor performance against England, Sanju Samson has been included in the squad. He scored only 51 runs in five matches. However, his place in the playing XI is not certain. Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma are confirmed as the opening batsmen. Jitesh Sharma, known as a finisher, could replace Samson.
Gavaskar’s Opinion
Former captain and 1984 Asia Cup winner Sunil Gavaskar has suggested a new batting position for Samson. He said that Samson could be preferred over Jitesh in the first few matches. Gavaskar believes that Samson could bat at number three, while Tilak Varma could be used as a finisher.
Tilak and Hardik’s Roles
The team management has settled on Tilak Varma at number three, and there is little chance of a change. Hardik Pandya could bat at number five or six. If Samson gets a chance, he could be tried as a finisher.
Upcoming Fixtures
India will face the UAE on September 10, Pakistan on September 14, and Oman on September 19. The Asia Cup final will be played on September 28.
