Amidst the controversy over SIR before the assembly elections in Bihar, the Election Commission has taken a big decision. The Commission has said that it will be implemented simultaneously across the country. Regarding this, the Election Commission will have a big meeting with the Chief Election Officers in Delhi on September 10. The Election Commission has also sought suggestions for additional documents to include Indian citizens in SIR.

Information has been sought on a total of 10 points through a power point presentation, including the number of existing voters, date and data of the previous SIR, status of digitization. A report has to be submitted on rationalization of polling stations and the total number of centers. The presentation will also focus on the status of appointment and training of officers and BLOs. The process of SIR is going on in Bihar and it will be completed by September 30.

The Commission has officially But the official date for its implementation across the country has not been decided yet, but sources have indicated that SIR will be implemented simultaneously across the country. The final decision on the date of SIR will be taken after the meeting on 10 September.

On June 24, in its order on SIR related to Bihar, the Election Commission had mentioned about implementing SIR in the entire country. In the order related to Bihar, the commission had written that under section 21 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950 (RPA 1950) and other relevant provisions, the commission has the power to direct special intensive revision of electoral rolls, which also includes preparation of fresh voter lists; therefore, the commission has now decided to initiate special intensive revision throughout the country, so that the constitutional responsibility of the integrity of the electoral rolls can be fulfilled.
