Delhi likely to conduct cloud seeding trials: How it works, why it's being tested and what to expect

Cloud seeding is a weather modification technology that aims to induce artificial rainfall by dispersing substances- primarily silver iodide, iodised salt, and rock salt- into moisture-bearing clouds via aircraft. These particles encourage water droplets to form and grow, stimulating precipitation. In Delhi, Cessna 206-H aircraft, specially equipped for this purpose by IIT-Kanpur, will be used to release these substances below the cloud base during sorties.
