CHENNAI, Sept 6: The 13th annual convocation of VIT Chennai was held here today.
Dr Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, Minister for Information Technology and Digital Services, Government of Tamil Nadu, participated in the convocation ceremony as the chief guest.
Shelley Salehin, Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh, Chennai, was the guest of honour.
Dr G Viswanathan, Founder and Chancellor, Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), presided over the convocation ceremony.
VIT vice-presidents Sankar Viswanathan and Dr G V Selvam took part in the convocation ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Palanivel Thiaga Rajan stressed the importance of universal access to education for everyone across genders, communities and religions.
He said education should make people have a softer view of society and the concept of offering humanities, social sciences and law in technical institutions was important.
“For over a century, we have seen in Tamil Nadu that education is the key to good societal outcomes. The notions of social justice, equity start with equal access to education and in this sense, I commend Dr G Viswanathan for his vision many decades ago and how he has changed the face of education in Tamil Nadu and other parts of the country,” the Minister remarked.
Shelley Salehin said character and talent were the two most important virtues for young people.
“Convocation was one of celebration, not just for students, but also for their parents and faculty, who had supported them all along,” he said.
Dr G Viswanathan said that if so many young people were able to have access to quality higher education, it was primarily due to the investment from parents, while appealing to the Centre and State governments to invest more in education, particularly in higher education.
During the event, 6,581 undergraduate, post-graduate and research scholars received their degrees.
Among others who attended the event included Dr V S Kanchana Bhaaskaran, Dr T Thyagarajan, Dr Partha Sharathi Mallick and Dr T Jayabarathi.
