Jammu and Kashmir: Army kills at least 1 terrorist in Kulgam as 'fierce gunfight' continues

A terrorist was killed while an Army officer was injured in an encounter between militants and security forces in the Guddar area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Monday.

“During the operation one terrorist has been eliminated and a junior commissioned officer suffered injuries. Operation is in progress," the Army said in a post on X.

The joint search operation was launched after the army received specific interlligence from the Jammu and Kashmir Police.

A police spokesman confirmed that an encounter has started in Kulgam. In a post on X, the spokesman said:

“Based on specific intelligence, #encounter has started in Guddar forest of #Kulgam. SOG of J&K Police, Army and CRPF on job. Further details to follow.”

The Army added that the soldiers had challenged the terrorists after noting suspicious activity. The terrorists opened fire leading to an encounter.

Srinagar-based Chinar Corps of the Indian Army posted posted on X saying, “Vigilant troops observed suspicious activity and, upon being challenged, terrorists opened fire, prompting a fierce exchange of gunfire during which one terrorist was eliminated and a junior commissioned officer sustained injuries.”

Security officials said that two to three more terrorists may still be in hiding in the area and additional forces were deployed.
