Karra led Cong team visits Garkhal, Pargwal; meets affected people

JAMMU, Sept 8: JKPCC president Tariq Hameed Karra along with a team of senior Congress leaders today undertook an extensive tour of the extreme border areas of Garkhal, Pargwal and Hamirpur in Akhnoor sector to assess the devastation caused by incessant rains and massive floods that uprooted and affected a large population.
Karra was accompanied by working president Raman Bhalla, former Ministers Mula Ram and Yogesh Sawhney, chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma, ex-MLA Balbir Singh, DDC member T S Tony, Chairman ST Wing Ch Hussain Ali Wafa, Prof Ashok Bhagat, Chairman Kissan Congress Bharat Priye, JKPCC Kissan Congress Chairman Kuldeep Sharma and several other senior leaders. The team toured the worst-hit border belt, interacting with locals and inspecting the scale of destruction.
Officials and residents informed the leaders that several people had to be rescued during the calamity, including the airlifting of tribal families from Garkhal area. The floods cut off Pargwal, Dhanpur and Hamirpur corner near the zero line, damaging road links and destroying standing crops of paddy, maize, fodder grass, as well as a large number of kachha and thatched houses.
Karra assured the people that their genuine concerns would be taken up with the Union Territory administration as well as the Central Government. He said the Congress party would press for a comprehensive relief and rehabilitation package to mitigate the hardships of the affected population. “It is the duty of the Government to provide them all basic facilities and support so that they can rebuild their lives and cultivate their agricultural lands,” he added.
Earlier, the JKPCC chief also visited Katal Battal Nagrota, Gorkha Nagar, Gujjar Nagar and other parts of Jammu city to listen to the grievances of flood-affected people and assured them of full support in raising their demands at appropriate forums.
