Bihar Cabinet approves increase in stipend for anganwadi workers ahead of Assembly polls

The Bihar Cabinet on Tuesday approved an increase in the stipend of anganwadi workers and helpers, PTI reported.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
On Monday, Kumar announced that anganwadi workers will receive Rs 9,000 per month as a stipend, up from Rs 7,000. The honorarium for anganwadi helpers has been raised to Rs 4,500 from Rs 4,000.
The move came ahead of the Assembly elections, likely to be held in October or November.
This was the latest in a series of welfare measures announced by the Nitish Kumar government in the run-up to the polls.
On August 29, the chief minister announced a scheme to provide financial assistance to one woman from each family to begin an employment venture of their choice.
On July 17, Kumar announced that up to 125 units of electricity would be free for consumers in the state, starting with the July billing cycle.
Some of the other measures included a three-fold increase in old-age pensions, a 1.5 times hike in the monthly allowance for all panchayat representatives, and a doubling of the honorarium for nearly 1.4 lakh Jeevika workers engaged in administrative, training and self-help group activities.
