Why 'Gen Z' protesters of Nepal want Sushika Karki as the head of interim government

Nepal's 'Gen Z' protesters, who have been demanding an overhaul of the corrupt political system, have proposed former chief justice Sushika Karki as the head of the interim government.

The name of Sushika Karki was proposed during a virtual meeting of members of the Gen-Z movement.

Sushila Karki was Nepal's first and only woman to serve as chief justice.

Amid the ongoing turmoil in Nepal following K.P. Sharma Oli's resignation, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki's name comes up as one of the possible candidates to lead the new transitional government, news agency ANI said, citing sources.

Born in Biratnagar in 1952, Karki holds degrees in political science and law. She began her professional life as a lawyer and assistant teacher before rising through Nepal’s legal ranks.

The protesters appear to have selected her to head the interim government, motivated by her image as non-affiliated with any political party, and history of impartial public service and her civic activism.

She has been known to take a strong stance against corruption during her tenure as head of the Supreme Court.

In 2017, Karki faced an impeachment motion from major parties. The impeachment motion was later quashed following public opposition and a Supreme Court order.
