Chandigarh Police form SIT in Haryana police officer Y Puran Kumar’s ‘suicide’ case

The Chandigarh Police today constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the FIR registered in connection with the ‘suicide’ of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar. The move came hours after representatives of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities, led by D Suresh, Resident Commissioner at Haryana Bhawan, New Delhi, met senior police officials at the Chandigarh Police Headquarters, demanding a fair and time-bound investigation into the case.

According to sources, only D Suresh and the late IPS officer Y Puran Kumar’s younger brother met with DGP, UT Chandigarh Sagar Preet Hooda, putting forward their demands. “More than 30 representatives of the SC/ST communities gathered in the committee room at the police headquarters and discussed their demands before forwarding them to the DGP,” said a member of the SC/ST community. Later, D Suresh and Y Puran Kumar’s brother met DGP Hooda in person to press for swift action.

Before meeting the DGP, D Suresh had shared with The Tribune that “this is a social issue, and we are just here to represent our demands and not at all politically motivated”. It is said that D Suresh was a close friend of Y Puran Kumar.

According to official orders issued by DGP Sagar Preet Hooda, the SIT has been formed to investigate FIR No. 156/2025 registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act at the Sector 11 (West) police station. The SIT will be headed by IGP Pushpendra Kumar, with SSP (UT) Kanwardeep Kaur, SP (City) KM Priyanka, DSP (Traffic) Charanjit Singh Virk, SDPO (South) Gurjit Kaur, and Inspector Jaiveer Singh Rana (SHO, PS-11) as members.

The team has been directed to conduct a prompt, impartial, and thorough investigation, covering all aspects, including evidence collection, witness examination, expert opinions, and legal advice. The DGP assured the delegation of a fair probe and immediate constitution of the SIT.

Meanwhile, the family of the late IPS officer is scheduled to hold a press conference around 4 pm at their Sector 24 residence, where they are expected to make a statement regarding the ongoing investigation and their further demands.

Apart from that, Ambedkar Students’ Association (ASA) will hold a protest at Student Centre, Panjab University, in solidarity with Y Puran Kumar’s family. Gautam Bhoria, Department of Education, PU, was at the police headquarters and expressed, “We strongly condemn the institutional killing of IPS Y Puran Kumar and the casteist silence of the Haryana Government.”
