South Western Railway Registers Impressive Growth in Freight Loading and Revenue in September 2025

South Western Railway has achieved its best-ever freight loading performance for the month of September since its inception, reflecting a strong and sustained growth in freight movement. During September 2025, the Zone loaded a total of 4.17 million tonnes (MT) of originating freight, surpassing the Railway Board’s target of 4.15 MT and registering an impressive 25% increase over the 3.3 MT loaded during the same period last year. The previous best loading for September was 4.1 MT achieved in 2023-24, which has now been surpassed. The remarkable growth was driven by improved performance across key commodities. Iron Ore loading rose by 2.8%, reaching 1.628 MT compared to 1.583 MT last year. Steel loading increased sharply by 53.3%, touching 0.906 MT against 0.591 MT in the previous year. Coal loading recorded a growth of 45.8%, achieving 0.745 MT compared to 0.511 MT last year. RMSP (Raw Material for Steel Plants) registered an exceptional increase of 306%, reaching 0.337 MT as against 0.083 MT in September 2024. Fertilizer loading grew by 29.8% to 0.109 MT, while Container traffic increased by 37.9%, reaching 0.080 MT as compared to 0.058 MT in the previous year.

During September 2025, SWR earned ₹282 crore from passenger services, marking a 6.38% increase over the ₹264.83 crore earned in September 2024. The Zone also witnessed a rise in passenger traffic, carrying 14.34 million passengers, an increase of 7.26% over the 13.37 million passengers handled during the same period last year.

Freight performance continued to be the key driver of earnings, with freight revenue touching ₹427.50 crore, reflecting a substantial growth of 35.78% compared to ₹314.85 crore recorded in September 2024. This marks one of the best monthly freight performances for the Zone in recent years.

Cumulatively, up to September 2025, SWR has earned ₹2,578 crore from freight traffic, showing a 27.29% growth over ₹2,025.33 crore earned in the corresponding period of the previous year. Passenger earnings during this period stood at ₹1,650 crore, registering a 2.68% increase over ₹1,606.56 crore last year. The total number of passengers carried up to September 2025 rose to 87.99 million, up by 6.81% compared to 82.38 million in the same period of 2024.
