Bengal shocker: Medical student raped, robbed near hospital gate in Durgapur, brings back flashes of RG Kar case

New Delhi: In a shocking incident reminiscent of the 2024 RG Kar medical student rape case, a student at a private medical college was allegedly dragged and raped inside the hospital premises of a private medical college near Shobhapur in Durgapur, West Bengal.

Victim belongs to Odisha

The victim, a second-year student, hails from Jaleswar in Odisha and is pursuing her MBBS degree at a private medical college near Shobhapur in Durgapur, 170 km from Kolkata.

According to the sources, the incident occurred when the student stepped out of the campus on Friday, October 10, at 8.30 pm with a male friend. When the two reached the campus gate, a man allegedly dragged her to a secluded area behind the hospital and raped her.

Police investigation is on

The police were informed about the incident, and after rushing to the spot, they started an investigation. The survivor was admitted to a hospital for medical examination. The police are also questioning staff of the medical college and other individuals, including the male friend who accompanied the woman.

The victim’s father, while talking to reporters, said that he was informed of the incident by his daughter’s friend. “When I reached there, my daughter was in a serious condition, and there was no response from the hospital administration,” he said, adding that his daughter had gone outside the campus to eat ‘phuchka’ (golgappas) after one boy, Wasif Ali, said to be her boyfriend, called her to meet him.

Four to five people were there

“When she reached the campus gate, around four to five people were there. One of them raped her, took her mobile phone, and demanded Rs 3,000 to return it. Later, the boy who had gone with her brought her back,” he said.

“I want justice for my daughter so that such incidents do not happen to any other girl. There is no proper security on the campus,” alleged the victim’s father.

However, police are yet to issue an official statement in the case. Sources said the investigators are examining multiple angles to chart the sequence of events.

State government criticised

The incident comes at a time when the ruling Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool (TMC) government has been facing strong criticism over crimes against women.

In July, the government came under fire after a law student was allegedly gangraped inside the campus of South Calcutta Law College in Kasba.

On 9 August 2024, a 31-year-old female postgraduate trainee doctor at R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata was raped and murdered in a college building.
