At the inauguration of the 49th International Kaleen Mela and the 4th Carpet Expo in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh's Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath urged the industry to see the recent US tariffs not as a setback but as a chance to break into new markets.

Adityanath acknowledged the challenge posed by the US trade barriers but quickly shifted the focus to opportunity, as he addressed a room buzzing with entrepreneurs from across the globe, who were seemingly tense about the recent Trump tariffs.

When one door closes, ten more can open, he said, promising vigorous efforts towards free trade agreements with nations like the UAE and the UK, which could unlock fresh avenues for exports.

A high-level government committee will be set up to support the industry and keep a close eye on the evolving situation, he added.

Adityanath also recounted the carpet industry's near collapse 11 years ago, highlighting how concerted efforts revived the famed carpet hubs of Bhadohi, Mirzapur, and Varanasi.

The once-struggling clusters now boast a bustling Carpet Expo Mart and attract hundreds of buyers from nearly 90 countries.

MSME initiatives

Adityanath also stressed the government's role in championing regional crafts through MSME and the One District One Product scheme, which has thrust products like Bhadohi carpets and Varanasi silk onto the world stage.

Uttar Pradesh's exports have surged past the Rs 2 lakh crore mark.

In UP, the carpet sector is a vibrant slice of living culture, employing up to 30 lakh people, including a significant number of women who craft carpets from their homes, empowering themselves economically.

Adityanath also spoke on the recent labour shortages, assuring that efforts are underway to engage more local workers and women.

The event also saw the distribution of loans to beneficiaries of various state schemes, reinforcing the government's pledge to support and elevate this crucial sector.
