GNDU youth fest begins with tribute to flood victims

Guru Nanak Dev University kicked off its Zonal Youth Festival-2025 today, which will continue until November 10. The event, dedicated to Punjab’s flood victims, saw nearly 300 students from 14 affiliated education colleges perform with passion, touching the hearts of the audience through art and social messages.

The students used skits, costume parade, mimicry and folk songs to show the struggle and courage of flood-affected families. They also praised the help rendered by people cutting across regions and religions. The emotional performances moved the audience deeply.

The festival started with Vice-Chancellor Prof Karamjeet Singh, Dean Students Welfare, Dr Harvinder Singh Saini, Director, Youth Welfare, Dr Amandeep Singh, and DSP Shiv Darshan Singh lighting the ceremonial lamp. A minute’s silence was observed to honour the memory of flood victims and notable personalities who passed away this year.

The vice-chancellor praised the unity shown in helping flood victims, calling it a great example of humanity. He encouraged the students to stay disciplined and serve others to succeed in life.

Today’s events included costume parade, mimicry, skits, ghazals and folk songs at the auditorium. The Architecture Department hosted painting and poster-making events, while clay modelling, slogan-writing and cartooning contests took place in the afternoon. Poetry, debate and elocution took place at the Conference Hall.

The Association of United College Teachers, a private organisation comprising members of private colleges affiliated to GNDU had earlier requested the GNDU vice-chancellor to suspend youth festivals for the current year due to floods. But Dr Harvinder Singh, Dean Students Welfare, said the festival celebrates Punjab’s culture and gives students a chance to showcase their talent in art, music and discussions. “Despite the devastation caused, the people of Punjab showed what Chardi Kala is, the undying spirit to live life and rebuild it. Our festival season is dedicated to the same Chardi Kala." The winners will represent GNDU at the Inter-Zonal Youth Festival.
