Shubman Gill opens up on team’s expectation from Rohit and Kohli ahead of Australia series, says, ‘We want…
New Delhi: India secured a 2-0 series win over the West Indies, on Day 5 of the second Test in New Delhi, giving Shubman Gill his first Test series victory as captain. While speaking on ‘Amul Cricket Live,’ Gill discussed about the team’s performance, his captaincy approach, the upcoming Australia tour, and Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s comeback
India’s captain Shubman Gill opened up about his feelings of winning the series, “Definitely, a very pleasing feeling. I think the way we played in both matches in all departments was commendable. We turned it around pretty nicely. In terms of batting, I’m really enjoying my time out there and not really thinking too much about expectations, pressure, and all of those things. I just want to go out there and enjoy what I’ve been doing since I was a kid”
Shubman Gill reflected on his role as captain
Gill also reflected on his role as captain and said, “Being involved in some of the key decisions is something that I really like, and I think it brings out the best in me. And that’s what’s happening. I enjoy responsibility. I like to be ‘the guy’ out there, and I think it’s been helping me.”
Gill showered praise on Kuldeep following his sensational bowling, “I am extremely happy with Kuldeep. He’s someone who’s always been a strike bowler for us. And you’re always tempted, in whatever conditions you play, to play a wrist spinner, especially someone like Kuldeep. But sometimes you have to weigh your options, whether you want to go with an extra all-rounder or a wrist spinner. He’s someone who always keeps you in the game, no matter what kind of surface you’re playing on.”
Gill on managing the transition between formats
When asked about managing the transition between formats, he highlighted that going back to the basics works a lot, “From the Asia Cup to this Test series, it was a very quick turnaround. We finished the Asia Cup, and in the next two or three days, we were playing a Test match. That was new for me. But I think going back to the basics of a particular format is something that works for me. Whenever you’re switching formats, knowing what the basics and the foundation of that format are is something I go back to, and I think that works for me.”
On his thoughts about the upcoming Australia series, Gill shared insights on the team’s preparation, “We’ve been playing some of the best ODI cricket in the past two or three years, and nothing changes for us. It’s more or less the same team that we’re playing. So, very excited to go out there and play in Australia”.
Gill spoke about RO-KO’s comeback
Gill also spoke about Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s ODI comeback and said, “They’ve been playing for India for the past 10–15 years and winning matches for us. The experience that they bring to the table is something every captain or every team wants. And that’s what we are looking forward to. We just want them to go out there and do their magic.”
