Diwali holidays 2025: There’s good news for students across the country ahead of Diwali. School holidays have been announced in several states, including Rajasthan, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh. In Uttar Pradesh, the holiday will run from October 19th to 23rd. In Bihar and Rajasthan, children will get a longer break of 10 to 12 days.

School holidays have now been announced in many states. Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Karnataka have announced the official dates for their respective school holidays for Diwali.
Vacation begins today in Rajasthan, schools will remain closed for 12 days
According to an order issued by Rajasthan Director of Secondary Education, Sitaram Jat, the Diwali holidays in the state have now begun earlier. While the holidays were originally scheduled from October 16th to 27th, they will now be effective from October 13th. However, the total holiday period will remain the same, i.e., 12 days, including Sunday (October 12th). All government and private schools in the Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Udaipur, Ajmer, and Kota divisions of the state will remain closed during this period.
Bihar to observe extended holidays for Diwali and Chhath Puja
According to the holiday calendar released by the Bihar government, all schools in the state will be closed from October 20th to October 29th, 2025. This period includes both Diwali and Chhath Puja. Government and private schools in all districts, including the capital Patna, Gaya, Darbhanga, Bhagalpur, and Saharsa, will remain closed during this period. The Education Department has sent this order to all District Education Officers so that school management can make advance preparations.
Diwali Celebrations in Uttar Pradesh, Schools to Remain Holiday for Three Days
The Uttar Pradesh government has also announced school holidays for Diwali and related festivals. All basic, secondary, council, and government schools in the state will observe the following holidays:
October 20 (Monday) – Diwali holiday
October 22 (Wednesday) – Govardhan Puja
October 23 (Thursday) – Bhai Dooj
Additionally, with the inclusion of Sunday, October 19th, as a holiday, students will benefit from four consecutive days of holiday.
Preparations complete in UP districts as well
The Education Department has issued notifications regarding holiday holidays in the state’s major districts – Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, Meerut, Ayodhya, Agra, Jhansi, and Noida.
Lucknow’s District School Inspector, Dr. Vinod Pandey, stated that holiday holidays have been declared for schools in connection with Diwali and Govardhan Puja. Instructions regarding cleanliness and safety have also been issued to all educational institutions to ensure a clean environment for children after the holidays. In Kanpur and Varanasi, schools began to experience a festive atmosphere as early as October 17th. Many schools organized Diwali celebrations and diya decoration competitions, reflecting the traditional enthusiasm among children.
Karnataka already announced holiday, extended due to caste survey
The Karnataka government had previously announced that government and aided schools in the state would be closed from October 8th to October 18th. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah made this decision to ensure the smooth conduct of the ongoing caste survey in the state. Educational institutions will remain closed during this period, and teachers have been instructed to assist in administrative work.
When is Diwali in 2025?
This year, Diwali will be celebrated on Monday, October 20, 2025. According to the calendar, the Kartik Amavasya date will begin on the afternoon of October 20 and will continue until the evening of October 21. The auspicious time for Lakshmi Puja will be during the “Pradosh Kaal” (evening) on the evening of October 20, when lamps will be lit and prayers will be offered across the country.

Mamta Verma, a resident of Lucknow, whose two children study in grades 6 and 9, says that the long holidays are a joy for the children. This time gives them a chance to connect with family and relieve the pressure of studies. We are planning to take the children to Ayodhya this time.
