Odisha youth poses as Maoist to extort Rs 35 Lakh from father, arrested

In a bizarre case, police arrested a 24-year-old youth named Ankush Agrawal, son of a contractor from Rupra Road under Narla police limits in Kalahandi district, for impersonating as a Maoist to extort money from his father, official sources said on Wednesday.

According to police sources, Ankush crafted a threatening letter in the name of Maoists and left it inside his car on October 6, demanding Rs 35 lakh from his father Dinesh Agrawal, a local contractor. The letter warned that in case the money is not paid, the entire family would be eliminated.

The young man did not stop there — he allegedly sent a similar threat letter to his father's business associate to escalate the pressure.

Terrified for their lives, the family approached Narla Police Station, prompting an immediate investigation. Cops uncovered the shocking truth — the so-called Maoist threat was a hoax orchestrated by Ankush himself.

The youth was later arrested and produced in court, and now he faces serious charges for criminal intimidation and extortion. The case stunned the local community, raising concerns over increasing desperation among youth, even from well-off families.

“We received a report on October 7 mentioning that a person from Narla had received a letter through which Maoists had demanded extortion money to release his son. Acting on the FIR, we had immediately launched a probe,” Kesinga SDPO, Sandeep Majhi, said.

“During a detailed probe, it was ascertained that a suspect person was behind the extortion demand. The accused was the son of the complainant. He himself had hatched a conspiracy and accordingly written the letters. When questioned, the accused confessed to his crime. Following this, he was arrested and forwarded to court yesterday,” the SDPO stated.
