Congress flags ‘staggering’ rise in assets of BJP MP’s wife

The Congress on Thursday demanded a probe into what it called an “astronomical” increase in the assets of BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s wife, Anamika Gautam, whose declared wealth has surged from Rs 50 lakh in 2009 to Rs 31.32 crore in 2024.Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters, party spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said the figures taken from Dubey’s own election affidavits have raised serious questions about transparency and accountability. “This is an open and shut case of corruption,” she said, demanding that both Dubey and his wife explain the “extraordinary jump” in assets and income.

According to Shrinate, Anamika’s movable assets were valued at Rs 50 lakh in 2009, with no immovable property at the time. By 2014, her movable assets had risen to Rs 1.03 crore and immovable property to Rs 5.53 crore. In 2019, the combined total stood at Rs 13.06 crore, which further ballooned to about Rs 40 crore in 2024, including debts worth Rs 8 crore claimed to have been taken from various individuals.

The Congress further claimed that Dubey had listed Abhishek Jha as one of the lenders who loaned his wife Rs 1.20 crore. However, Jha has publicly denied giving a loan to Anamika. Saying there was no record of the transaction, Shrinate also questioned the legitimacy of other loans.

She added that the spike in income figures was equally alarming. “From an annual income of under Rs 4 lakh in FY14, Mrs Dubey’s income rose to Rs 2.16 crore in FY18,” Shrinate said, adding that even this sharp rise did not justify the scale of accumulated assets.

The Congress leader accused the Modi government of double standards, saying, “While opposition leaders are being targeted with false cases, BJP leaders facing serious allegations are shielded from scrutiny.”

Shrinate also cited a Lokpal communication dated July 24, following a complaint filed on May 24, 2025, which sought a reply from Dubey within four weeks. “It is unclear whether he ever responded,” she said, claiming the episode raised questions about the Lokpal’s own transparency.

She urged the government to order a full investigation into the “disproportionate growth” in the Dubeys’ wealth, saying, “If the Prime Minister can stay silent on this, it only exposes his hypocrisy on corruption.”
