Manchester United want in-form Italian striker from Saudi in January, ready €60 million bid: Report

Amid reports of Manchester United's interest in Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, fresh reports claim they are also tracking an Italian who is currently playing in the Saudi Pro League (RSL).

 

Al-Qadsiah striker Matteo Retegui, who moved to Saudi Arabia for a record sum from Atalanta, has scored three league goals this season after four rounds. He won the golden boot by far last season, finding the back of the net 25 times—six more than second-placed Moise Kean of Fiorentina.

Twenty-six-year-old Retegui's finishing skills and boundless stamina levels were hailed in Italy itself, while his quickness in adapting was praised following his big-money switch to the Middle East. Manchester United is most attracted by this aspect, as their new signings are taking time to settle down, Fichajes said in a report. Benjamin Šeško and Matheus Cunha can be effectively rotated if a third proven scorer, who can also be an impactful late substitute, joins the squad, United calculate.

Interestingly, the Red Devils have been warned several times in recent years about pinning their hopes on new purchases with zero Premier League experience. Argentine-born Matteo is no exception — having played for only Latin American and Italian teams so far ahead of reaching the RSL.

Al-Qadsiah, who are currently second in the domestic competition, are said to have paid an estimated sum of between €65 million and €68 million for Retegui. He has only just begun his life in Saudi, and United will have to spend big money if they are to bring the Italian back to Europe. According to the report, Ruben Amorim's team are willing to spend €60 million in January if he is willing to come. With Retegui's contract running until 2028, many are doubtful if the sum will be enough to convince his current club.
