Surcharge waiver scheme: Thousands clear water dues, Jal Board collects ₹6.56 crore
Thousands of residents in the national capital have cleared their long-pending water dues after the launch of Late Payment Surcharge Compensation (LPSC) Rebate Scheme. Delhi Jal Board has collected Rs 6.56 crore, with 3,635 consumers availing benefits worth over Rs 9.17 crore in rebates, as per the board. The scheme was launched on Tuesday to provide relief to consumers with pending water bills.
Speaking about the encouraging response, Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma said: “The overwhelming participation shows the growing sense of responsibility among Delhi’s citizens. The LPSC Rebate Scheme was introduced to help consumers settle their old dues without the burden of heavy penalties. Thousands have come forward to clear their accounts, and this shows that when governance is transparent and people-centric, the public responds with trust and cooperation.”
The minister added that the revenue generated through the scheme would be directly utilised to strengthen the city’s water infrastructure, repair pipelines, and improve water supply in colonies that faced shortages.
“Our aim is to ensure every drop of water in Delhi is accounted for and reaches every household efficiently,” Verma said.
The LPSC Rebate Scheme offers graded waivers on late payment surcharges for consumers who voluntarily clear their old water bills. It primarily targets domestic consumers who have accumulated arrears over the years. By simplifying the payment process both online and through zonal offices, the government has ensured that even ordinary citizens can easily avail the benefit.
According to officials, digital payments under the scheme had been steadily rising, reflecting the success of the Delhi Jal Board’s efforts to make billing and payment systems more transparent and citizen-friendly.
The minister’s office has also directed field teams to assist senior citizens and economically weaker households in availing the scheme before the rebate window closes.
“This initiative is not just about revenue; it is about rebuilding a culture of accountability and mutual trust between the government and the people,” the minister said.
