GSTR-3B Deadline: Good news! Government has extended the deadline for taxpayers to file GSTR-3B returns.

GSTR-3B Deadline: The government has extended the deadline for filing GSTR-3B returns to October 25. This relief has been introduced to coincide with Diwali. Chartered accountants had requested the extension due to time constraints and filing complexities.

GSTR-3B Deadline: On October 19th, the government extended the deadline for filing the monthly GSTR-3B tax form by five days to October 25th. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) stated in a notification that GSTR-3B filers for the September and July-September quarters can now file their taxes by October 25th. This extension was expected, as Diwali falls on October 20th.

Demands for Deadline Extension

A group of chartered accountants had requested the central government to extend the deadline for filing GSTR-3B returns for September 2025. They argued that the deadline, falling on October 20th, coinciding with Diwali, would make filing difficult for professionals and companies. Filing GSTR-3B involves tasks such as data entry, reviewing ITC, and arranging funds for tax payments, which can lead to time-consuming tasks.

What is GSTR-3B?

The GSTR-3B is a monthly and quarterly return filed by registered taxpayers between the 20th, 22nd, and 24th of each month, depending on the category. It provides information about and fulfills their GST liability.

Penalty for Missing the Deadline

Failure to file a GSTR-3B return on time attracts a late fee. As a general rule, the penalty is ₹50 per day (₹25 each for CGST and SGST). If there is no tax liability, the penalty is ₹20 per day. This fee applies from the day following the deadline until the filing date, up to a maximum of ₹5,000 per taxpayer. Additionally, interest at 18% per annum is charged on the tax amount.
