BJP stifling democracy and protecting its favourites: Rajesh Gupta

JAMMU, Oct 19: National Conference leader Rajesh Gupta today launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of ‘stifling democratic processes and protecting its favourites’ in Jammu & Kashmir.
In a statement issued, Gupta lauded the Omar Abdullah-led administration for “delivering responsive governance and regaining public trust,” crediting it with prioritising people’s issues and addressing ground-level concerns.
He said, “Omar Abdullah’s government has clearly prioritised people’s concerns, addressed ground-level grievances and worked to stabilise institutions across the region, while the BJP appeared visibly uncomfortable and defensive in response.”
Gupta said, “Instead of engaging on governance, the BJP is investing its energy in blocking and discrediting a functioning administration.”
He cited the party’s recent mandate to Devyani Rana as “a textbook case of nepotism that undercuts BJP’s own talk of internal democracy.”
The NC leader alleged that BJP MLAs came to power riding the Modi wave but abandoned their duty once elected, failing to raise public grievances or question the Lieutenant Governor on key administrative matters.
“If the BJP does not speak up on major pending matters, including the introduction of business rules in the Assembly, it risks losing the mandate it once secured in Modi’s name,” he added.
