Bhubaneswar sex racket: DGP orders minor girl rape case to be probed as Red Flag case

The Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) on Tuesday ordered that the Jharkhand minor girl rape case in Bhubaneswar’s Laxmisagar area be classified as a Red Flag case for priority investigation.

According to official sources, four women DSPs from the Crime Against Women (CAW) unit have been assigned to assist in the probe, which will be closely supervised by the CAW chief. Following the DGP’s directive, a special independent team has been constituted, and the Crime Branch will formally register the case under the Red Flag category on Wednesday.

Odisha Police will also coordinate with Jharkhand Police during the investigation, given the interstate nature of the case.

Meanwhile, the Commissionerate Police have already arrested four individuals, including the alleged mastermind, in connection with the rape and trafficking of a 17-year-old girl from Jharkhand. The arrests were made during an ongoing investigation into the incident.

The case came to light late on Friday night, when the survivor, in a bloodied and semi-conscious state, was brought to Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar. Medical personnel, upon observing injuries suggestive of sexual assault, immediately alerted the police.

During initial questioning, the minor, believed to be a native of Jharkhand, was unable to respond coherently. A formal case was subsequently registered, leading to a raid in the Laxmisagar area, where ten young women were rescued from a residential property.

The police are now investigating whether the property was being used as part of a trafficking and exploitation network operating across state lines.
