Odisha may see more rain as three back-to-back low-pressure systems brew over BoB

A series of three consecutive low-pressure systems are likely to develop over the Bay of Bengal, one after another, in the coming days. While one system has already formed, meteorologist Sarat Sahu on Tuesday predicted that the second is expected around October 26, followed by a third around October 29.

According to Sahu, the current system may not intensify significantly but could trigger heavy rainfall in southern Odisha districts. The second system, expected to form between October 26–27, is likely to strengthen further, bringing a stronger impact compared to the present one.

However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has not yet officially confirmed the possibility of three back-to-back low-pressure formations.

Explaining the weather pattern, Sahu said, “The wind is flowing from the east and northeast directions, creating favourable conditions for multiple systems to form over the Bay of Bengal. During this transition period, several systems are developing, but none are intensifying strongly due to the changing atmospheric dynamics.”

He added that if the current system makes landfall on October 23 or 24, another is likely to form around October 25–26, which could gradually intensify. A third system may emerge over the east-central Bay of Bengal around October 29–30, coinciding with the landfall of the preceding system.

Under the influence of the present low-pressure system, moderate to heavy rainfall is likely in several parts of Odisha between October 24 and 26.

Sahu further noted, “As moist winds from the east and northeast continue to blow, the atmosphere remains cool and moisture-laden, creating favourable conditions for rain in isolated places across the state.”
