Concrete bridge to be built over Chandra river at Sissu

A 110-metre-long cement concrete bridge will soon be constructed over the Chandra river near Sissu in Lahaul and Spiti district. The bridge will provide relief to residents who have been risking their lives to cross the river ever since the previous bridge was washed away in the 2023 floods.

National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has approved the project estimated to cost Rs 9.72 crore, under the MLA priority scheme.

Lahaul and Spiti MLA Anuradha Rana, who actively pursued the project with both state government and NABARD, confirmed the development and said that the Public Works Department was preparing to initiate the tender process shortly.

“The earlier bridge was destroyed in the 2023 floods. Since then, local residents had no option but to use a ropeway to cross the river. The situation was extremely dangerous. I had been following up the matter with the government and NABARD and I am glad the project has now been sanctioned,” said Anuradha.

In addition to this bridge project near Sissu, NABARD has also approved Rs 14.39 crore for the reconstruction of the Khandip Canal in Sumnam. Both projects are expected to significantly improve connectivity and irrigation infrastructure in the region.

The MLA expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu for his support in securing funds. “The Chief Minister’s backing was crucial in getting these projects approved. I sincerely thank him for his commitment to the development of tribal and remote areas like ours,” she added.

The announcement has been warmly welcomed by local representatives and villagers. Zila Parishad chairperson Veena Devi, members Nirmala, Dorje Larje, Chezhang Dolma and BDC chairman Vipin Shashni have also extended their thanks to MLA Rana for her efforts in pushing the projects forward.

Once completed, the new RCC bridge is expected to ensure year-round connectivity and safety for the residents of Sissu and nearby areas, enhancing both transportation and emergency response capabilities in this high-altitude region.
