Street vendors get new, modern kiosks in Jammu

The Jammu Municipal Corporation (MC) on Monday conducted a draw of lots to allot newly constructed modern kiosks at Below Gummat steps as part of its urban modernisation initiative aimed at rehabilitating street vendors in a structured and transparent manner.

Earlier, 82 old kiosks at the site were dismantled to make way for the new vending zone. The project aims to provide vendors with hygienic, aesthetically designed and durable kiosks built to uniform standards.

The kiosks have been constructed in three sizes — 4×10 ft, 6×10 ft, and 8×10 ft — to suit different business needs. The structures incorporate modern materials to ensure longevity and better ventilation, enhancing both vendor convenience and the city’s visual appeal.

The allotment process was carried out through a transparent draw under the chairmanship of JMC Commissioner Dr Devansh Yadav, in the presence of senior officials including the Joint Commissioners, Deputy Commissioner (S), Chief Accounts Officer, Deputy Legal Remembrancer and Chief Revenue Officer.

Dr Yadav said the project was “a model of urban renewal aimed at balancing vendor welfare with city beautification.” He added that additional measures such as benches, flower pots and an open terrace cafeteria would soon be introduced to make the area more people-friendly.

A JMC spokesperson said, “The beneficiaries, who were earlier displaced due to the removal of old kiosks, expressed their gratitude to the MC for providing well-designed vending spaces through a transparent and equitable system.”
