The case took a dramatic turn after Shamshudeen Chaudhary, a resident of Malerkotla and a family acquaintance, held a press conference referring to Aqil’s old social media posts from August. In those posts, Aqil made serious allegations against his family, claiming his father and wife were having an affair and expressing fear for his life.
“I found out about my wife’s affair with my father. I am under extreme stress and mental trauma… I feel every day that they will frame me in a false case,” Aqil said in one of the videos reportedly recorded weeks before his death.
He also accused his mother, Razia Sultana, and sister of being part of a “conspiracy” against him, claiming, “Their plan is to get me falsely imprisoned or killed.”
Based on these videos and a complaint by Chaudhary, police registered an FIR at the MDC police station against former DGP (Human Rights) Mohammad Mustafa, his wife Razia Sultana, their daughter, and daughter-in-law in connection with Aqil’s death.
Chaudhary, who was once associated with the Shiromani Akali Dal and later joined AAP MLA Mohammad Jamil Ur Rahman in Malerkotla, said he lived near Mustafa’s house and had met Aqil a few times. An AAP leader, however, claimed Chaudhary had been inactive in the party for over a year and a half and had stopped taking calls.
In one of his social media posts, Aqil alleged that his family called him mentally unstable and forced him into a rehab centre against his will. “This confinement was illegal because I was not intoxicated… They threatened that if I acted against them, they would frame me in a rape or murder case,” he said in the video.
Aqil, who is survived by his wife and two young children, later released another video where he appeared to withdraw his earlier statements, blaming his mental health for them. However, that video ended suddenly with him saying, “Will they get me killed? They are all scoundrels.”
Panchkula Deputy Commissioner of Police Srishti Gupta confirmed the developments, stating, “A complaint was received alleging that family members were involved in his death. The social media posts, videos, and photos raised suspicion, leading to the FIR being registered.”
