Forty-three days after his death in the Russia-Ukraine battlefields, the mortal remains of Haryana native Karam Chand arrived in India on Saturday, October 18. Like many others, 24-year-old Chand was forced to fight in Ukraine after being tricked by an immigration agent.
Karam Chand was among the five natives of Haryana's Kaithal district who were sent to Russia by an agent identified as Satyawan, who has been arrested by the police since then. Last year, Ravi Mator, also 24, was killed by the Ukrainian forces while fighting for Russia.
Karam Chand wanted to build his life in Germany and was sent to Russia by the agent claiming it was his way to Berlin. However, at Moscow, he was forced to pick up arms for the Kremlin, the reports said. Karam Chand was killed in an explosion on the battlefronts, reports said.
It was in July that the late youth boarded the flight after making a payment of ₹8 lakh to the agent, The Print said in a report. On September 13, the news of his passing was shared with his family via Telegram by another Indian man among the Russian ranks, the report said. Later, they contacted the Ministry of External Affairs and ensured Karam Chand's mortal remains were brought to the village of Janedpur for his final resting.
As of October 2025, at least 12 Indian nationals have been confirmed killed while fighting for the Russian military in Ukraine. Additionally, 16 others are categorised as missing by Russian authorities. All of them are believed to have been deceived by Russian forces or agents at some point, leading them to become scapegoats at the frontlines of the invasion that has been going on for over three years.
