In the ever-evolving world of Bollywood, many actors come and go, but there are only a few people who carve a place in people’s hearts that remains timeless. One such example of this was a legend, Govardhan Asrani. From his infectious smile, his quick wit and his comic timing, he became one of the most cherished faces in the Indian cinema.

Born on 1 January 1941 in Jaipur, Asrani hailed from a simple Sindhi family. He started his journey into the world of entertainment as a voice artist on All India Radio. Although his expressive voice caught many ears, destiny had even bigger plans for him. Encouraged by filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak, he moved to Mumbai to pursue acting and later graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in 1966.

Although he worked in many films, his big break came with the film “Guddi” in 1971, which made him a familiar face. Later, he starred in many hit films and delivered a string of memorable performances in classics like Golmaal, Abhimaan, Bawarchi, and Chupke Chupke. His famous dialogues and expressions became a part of Bollywood folklore. Some of his most iconic roles were of a jailer in Sholay and a witty professor in Chupke Chupke.

Later, even when age and health challenges arrived in his life, he didn’t step away from the spotlight. He continued to act in television shows and stage plays. His wife, actress Manju Asrani, stood by him through thick and thin, as he continued to spread smiles across generations.  As per reports, Asrani worked for years to earn a fortune worth crores. His net worth ranged between Rs 40–45 crore, which he earned through films, TV shows, and brand endorsements.

Unfortunately, on 20 October 2025, Asrani took his last breath at the age of 84 after a prolonged illness at Mumbai’s Juhu Aarogya Nidhi Hospital. He passed away on the festival of Diwali, which left millions mourning a man who truly embodied joy.
