New Delhi: A video of the wedding of Fatima, the daughter of Ali Shamkhani, an advisor to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is going viral on social media. The wedding took place last year at the luxurious Espinas Palace Hotel in Tehran.
In the video, Fatima is seen wearing a strapless white wedding gown, and music is playing at the ceremony. Many women are seen without hijabs, which is against Iran’s hijab laws. Shamkhani is seen carrying his daughter to the wedding stage.

Ali Omidvari, a women’s rights activist, commented on the video on social media, writing, “Their bride is in the palace, but ours is buried underground.”
Shamkhani was the Secretary of the National Security Council.
This video comes at a time when Iran is planning to deploy 80,000 morality police to enforce hijab rules. Ali Shamkhani served as Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council from 2013 to 2023. He is considered a staunch supporter of hijab and moral rules.
Iranians are angry for three specific reasons:
Flaunting wealth: Most people in Iran are struggling with financial hardship. Many young people are so poor that they cannot even afford to get married. Consequently, this event by the Shamkhani family has sparked public outrage.
Ignoring Islamic rules: Shamkhani has always supported Islamic values and strict rules. However, the attire of his daughter and wife, and the women not wearing hijabs, are raising questions about his claims.
Western traditions: The video shows the father carrying his daughter onto the stage, a Western tradition. In Iran, the bride and groom usually enter together. This further enraged the crowd.
Who is Ali Shamkhani?
Ali Shamkhani is one of the most powerful figures in Iran and is very close to Supreme Leader Khamenei. He currently serves as Khamenei’s representative on the National Defence Council. Previously, he served as Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council for 10 years.
He was also a former Defence Minister and Commander of the Revolutionary Guards Navy. He was also involved in the negotiations for the nuclear deal with the United States.
Hundreds were killed in anti-hijab protests in 2022
In September 2022, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in police custody. Mahsa was detained by morality police for allegedly not wearing the hijab properly. This sparked nationwide protests in Iran.
Women and youth took to the streets, burning hijabs and chanting slogans against the regime. Hundreds were killed in these protests.
