Hoshiarpur Health Dept launches anti-tobacco awareness drive

In a determined effort to spread awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco and to encourage the youth to stay away from its use, the Health Department, under the guidance of Civil Surgeon Balbir Kumar, launched an intensive anti-tobacco awareness campaign across Hoshiarpur.

The initiative was led by district epidemiologists Jagdeep Singh and Salesh Kumar (IDSP), along with health workers Surinder Kalsi and Naresh Kumar. As part of the campaign, the health team visited several public areas, including the city bus stand, main markets and local shops. They educated the public on the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003, highlighting its key provisions and legal implications. Posters against tobacco use were prominently displayed and pamphlets detailing the ill-effects of tobacco were distributed to passersby.

During the outreach programme, the team provided comprehensive information on the severe health and environmental consequences of tobacco consumption. Shopkeepers were urged to display ‘No-Tobacco Zone’ boards and were warned against the sale of flavoured tobacco, hookahs and e-cigarettes. Special emphasis was placed on compliance with COTPA regulations.

The health team explained that under Section 4 of the COTPA, smoking or consuming tobacco in any form in public places was a punishable offence. Moreover, selling tobacco products to minors (below 18 years of age) or within 100 yards of any educational institution is strictly prohibited and constitutes a legal violation.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Jagdeep Singh stated, “Tobacco use and smoking are extremely harmful to health, leading to diseases like cancer, heart ailments and chronic respiratory issues. Let us all pledge to stay away from tobacco and spread awareness among others, so we can work towards building a tobacco-free society.”

Dr Shailesh said, “Quitting tobacco not only improves the quality of life, but also enhances overall health, energy and well-being.”

The awareness campaign was met with a positive response from the public, especially the youth, reinforcing the importance of community efforts in combating tobacco addiction and promoting healthier lifestyle.
