Nawanshahr football club inspires youth to stay fit & drug-free

Whenever there’s something to celebrate, the members of the Daily Morning Football Club in Nawanshahr choose to mark the occasion on the football field rather than in any conventional way.

Led by club president Ajay Mehra, the club organised a friendly football match to celebrate player Dheeraj Kumar securing permanent residency in Canada. The match was held at RK Arya College Ground, with support from college principal Puneet Aneja and the Nawanshahr District Cricket Association.

Sharing details, Tarsem Lal, chairman of the Civil Surgeon Office’s Mass Media Wing and Deputy Group Education & Information Officer, said the match was played between the teams of Dheeraj Kumar and Vikram.

In the first half, Team Vikram took control, with Sukhmeet Bajwa, Ajay Sareen and Jaskaran Singh each scoring a goal to lead 3–0. The second half saw Team Dheeraj make a strong comeback through goals by Ayush Gangar, Mani and Dheeraj Kumar, levelling the score at 3–3. The thrilling contest ended in a draw and was met with loud applause.

After the match, players and spectators congratulated Dheeraj Kumar on his achievement and wished him success in his new journey abroad.

On the occasion of Vishwakarma Day, Tarsem Lal also addressed the gathering, stressing the role of sports in steering youth away from drugs and promoting a healthy lifestyle. He reaffirmed the club’s commitment to realising the dreams of the martyrs and to strengthening community sports initiatives.

Refreshments were served after the match. Members of the Daily Morning Football Club are also working to guide local youth towards sports and away from addiction.

One of the club’s senior players and coaches, Raghvinder Pal Singh, a retired BSNL SDO, continues to play an active role post-retirement.
