Amid clashes with Afghanistan, ‘Inflation’ bomb explodes in Pakistan!, PKR 700 for tomatoes per…, apples, grapes are also…

The inflation rose in Pakistan due to the closure of the trade border with Afghanistan after conflict between the two countries. As the border was fully closed from October 11, the price of tomatoes in Pakistan has crossed around 600 Pakistani Rupees per kilogram. Apples and other fruits which come from Afghanistan are also facing shortages in the market and  becoming expensive.

Pakistan Afghanistan Conflict

After the conflict at the border between two countries, trade halted and caused prices of essential goods to rise in both countries. Ground fighting and Pakistani air strikes along the 2,600 km border have halted border crossing since October 11. The head of the Pakistan-Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce in Kabul, Khan Jan Alokozai, told Reuters that since the fighting began, all trade and supply chains stopped.

Around 500 containers of vegetables of daily export have gone wasted. In northwestern Pakistan near the main Torkham border crossing, around 5,000 containers of goods are stuck on both sides, causing shortages of tomatoes, apples, and grapes.

Pakistan accused the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan of using Afghanistan as a safe haven, which the Taliban denies. Pakistan carried out air strikes on Kabul targeting the group, and the Taliban retaliated by attacking Pakistani posts across the border, causing dozens of deaths. After, a ceasefire agreement was reached through talks mediated by Qatar and Turkey, but cross-border trade remains closed. The next round of talks is scheduled for October 25 in Istanbul.
